While the Dermalogica story begins in 1986, the force of change in the industry started in Los Angeles, circa 1983. Jane Wurwand, a tenured, United Kingdom-trained skin therapist new to the American “esthetician” industry, recognized that continuing skin and body therapy education was practically non-existent in the United States. While her training had been comprehensive and serious, US students entered the industry licensed yet under-trained, and worse, under-respected.

Jane put her education in action, opening a small classroom in Marina del Rey, California under the name The International Dermal Institute (IDI). After 4 wonderful years at Ohio University, I graduated with a degree in Retail Merchandising with a focus in Fine Arts and Business. Becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the jobs I was finding, I decided I wanted to start a business of my own. I dabbled in various creative outlets but couldn’t find anything that really grabbed my attention. I hadn’t given jewelry design a thought until I became fascinated with a friend’s fork bracelet she bought in NYC and decided to make one for myself. From there I experimented with different jewelry making techniques and made jewelry for friends and family. Everyone was so supportive of my new-found hobby that I eventually gained the courage to turn it into a business.

In 1956, five-year-old Dennis Bernard Campanaro started working in his father Eugene’s salon in Union, New Jersey. This business is truly my baby, but I wouldn’t be able to lug all those boxes of jars and 50-pound bags of wax on my own or make DIY wax melters on the spot or listen to my countless fragrance, label, and marketing ideas. It truly is a joint effort!

After facing a serious Neurological condition that started almost 10 years ago and has caused numerous physical disabilities, my ability to maintain work outside the home has been nearly impossible. To find something creative to do, that I can produce from my kitchen has been a huge blessing.

As empty-nesters the kitchen island that used to be filled with our three children, their homework, and after school snacks, with its view out the window of the old grey barn, is now where I work producing candles and filling orders.

I have always loved candles and a trip to the mall or TJ Maxx almost always found me with a candle in my cart. On a whim, I decided I would try making my own and as a birthday present to myself I bought enough supplies to make myself plenty of candles and also give them away as presents to friends and family. After much research I decided that Soy Wax was the way to go. I loved the fact that the wax was sourced from soy beans grown right here in the US. I also loved that Soy produces a cleaner (no soot) and longer lasting burn than paraffin wax, which is used in most candles. After trying my hand at few candles, I was hooked, and as they say the rest is history.
